Ideas with a spine

Books, manuals & training materials

High-pagination print that stays clear, useful and built to last.

Books, manuals & training

Build the format around the reader.

Whether it is a short-run book, a working manual or a complete training pack, we help shape the format around the reader and the way the content will be used.

Bring the content, intended reader, update cycle and any constraints on use. We will help resolve pagination, stock, covers, binding, interactive elements and distribution as one specification.

Made in Yorkshire by a team that cares about the detail.

What matters

Formats built around readers and real use.

A book to keep, a manual to consult and a training tool to handle all need different decisions before production begins.

01

Format guidance

Choose size, stock and pagination before they become expensive decisions.

02

Binding that fits

Saddle stitch, wire, perfect, squareback and practical filing options.

03

Repeatable production

Reliable files, colour and specifications for updates and future editions.

Books and publishing

Short-run books with the right structure, cover and binding.

From company histories and technical guides to self-published titles, books give information a tangible, lasting form. We support publishers, organisations and first-time authors through file setup, paper, covers, prototypes and production planning.

We can also help you think through practical publishing details such as pagination, cover width, spine allowance and where ISBN information needs to appear.

A printed book carries a different kind of authority from a file. It can be kept, passed on, displayed and returned to, whether the purpose is to preserve a family or company history, share professional knowledge, publish research or create a product for sale.

Short-run production lets you make a sensible first quantity, test a title or produce a specialist edition without filling a storeroom. Reprints can then follow an agreed specification as demand becomes clearer.

The work is produced through our Huddersfield studio with advice from people who understand book production, traditional reprographics and modern digital print. We can discuss responsibly sourced and recycled paper options, right-sized quantities and finishes that protect the book for its intended life.

This is a supported process rather than an automated upload portal. We review the purpose, artwork and production choices with you, explain the trade-offs and help first-time publishers understand what needs to be resolved before print.

Saddle stitched

A cost-effective stapled-spine route, often suited to compact 8–36 page books and booklets; the practical range depends on paper weight and finished size.

Perfect bound

A clean square spine for higher-pagination books, commonly from around 32 pages upwards where the paper and spine width create a dependable bind.

Wirobound

Pages open flat, making the format practical for guides, workbooks and material used alongside a task.

Half-Canadian and specialist binding

Concealed wire, bolts, combs and other less common constructions can be considered when the use demands them.

Binders and manuals

Working documents designed to be handled, navigated and updated.

Training manuals, health-and-safety guides, technical documents and site handbooks need to stay clear through repeated use. We match the construction to the environment, the update cycle and the way readers find information.

The format can be a bound manual, a loose-leaf binder or a complete folder with dividers and supporting sheets. Colour coding, tabs, section numbering and writable areas help people get to the right answer quickly.

Volunteer programmes, staff inductions, building guides and operational knowledge bases all place different demands on the cover, paper, binding and capacity. We specify those elements around how the document will be carried, stored, annotated and updated.

Printed manuals can also trigger current digital content through QR codes, NFC stickers and short links, linking a stable reference document to videos, forms, downloads and information that changes more frequently.

Tabbed and colour-coded folders

Create a clear route through modules, departments, programmes or operational sections.

Induction and knowledge packs

Combine manuals, dividers, handouts, forms and supporting documents in one organised resource.

Building and site guides

Durable handbooks for facilities, property and operational teams, with information structured around quick reference.

Connected print

Add QR codes, NFC stickers or short links to current videos, forms, downloads and supporting digital content.

Training materials

Printed tools that make learning more active and memorable.

We work with businesses, charities, colleges, coaches and youth organisations to turn learning content into resources people can hold, arrange, annotate and use together.

A pack can be a straightforward workbook or a complete facilitated kit, branded consistently and prepared for one workshop or a wider multi-location programme.

Physical resources can support visual, verbal and kinaesthetic learning without pulling participants towards another screen. The aim is not print for its own sake, but tools that encourage discussion, recall, problem solving and active participation.

We support corporate onboarding and compliance, charity and community programmes, classroom resources, health-and-wellbeing coaching and youth learning. The same core content can be organised differently for trainers, learners, facilitators and programme managers.

If the idea is still taking shape, we can help work out which pieces need to be writable, moveable, reusable or packed together. QR codes and short links can then connect the kit to videos, feedback forms and downloads within one learner journey.

Workbooks and course packs

Trainer guides, learner books, handouts, certificates, folders and evaluation material produced as one set.

Cards and tactile activities

Custom playing cards, sequencing cards and Velcro-mounted pieces for discussion, recall and model building.

Jigsaws and board games

Oversized collaborative puzzles and bespoke games that make a process or knowledge check more participative.

Packing and distribution

Bundle complete kits consistently and plan delivery for cohorts, branches, venues or facilitators.

Audience-specific sets

Create coordinated trainer, learner and facilitator versions without losing control of modules or branding.

Print-to-digital connections

Link physical resources to current video, forms, feedback and downloadable material where it improves the learning journey.

Production choices

Resolve the reading experience before locking the artwork.

Page size, margins, paper opacity, image reproduction, writable areas, cover durability and binding all affect how a publication works. We help settle those decisions early, then establish a repeatable specification for future editions or modules.

Before final artwork, it is worth checking the final page extent, whether sections must begin on particular sides, how far text and imagery sit from the binding, and whether the cover needs a spine. ISBN, barcode and publisher information also need a planned home when the title will be distributed commercially.

A proof or prototype lets you judge scale, paper, colour, navigation and binding as a physical object. Once approved, the specification becomes the reference for the first run and future reprints.

Files and pagination

Check page order, blank pages, bleed, image quality, margins and safe areas before the final cover width is calculated.

Text and image paper

Balance opacity, bulk, readability, writability and image reproduction rather than choosing by weight alone.

Covers and protection

Select board, lamination and specialist finishes around handling, expected life and the character of the publication.

Proof, prototype and reprint

Approve a physical reference, record the production specification and make later editions easier to reproduce consistently.
